Who do you think you are? - Let’s Geaux -

I was in a situation recently where I was asked to remove my hat. Once I did, and they saw my long flowing dreadlocks the person said, “Oh I thought you would be all ‘gapped up,’ (meaning they thought I would have a bald spot somewhere.), why do you wear a hat?” I replied I’ve worn a hat every day of my life for almost as long as I can remember, and the hat was a part of my Brand Persona. In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, establishing a strong brand persona is crucial for businesses, musicians, and individuals.

In our world of music, keeping it “real” or authentic means a lot. A brand persona creatively represents your personality, skills, interests, and goals. It's a way for you as a musician to differentiate yourself from other musicians, singers, rappers, etc., and create a unique identity for yourself as an artist. Musicians who stay true to their unique sound and artistic vision often leave a lasting impression on their audience. A brand persona is a real or fictional characteristic that represents who you are as an artist. When I think of exaggerated personas I think of artists like Whitney Houston. As the year passed by we found out that she was a bit tougher around the edges than the persona that Clive Davis showed us. But it worked for her. When you look at artists like Busta Rhyme, Dr. Dre, or Eminem you see that their persona shifted a bit with growing older.

Your persona can be used as a tool that helps your audience connect with you and for you to understand your target audience's demographics, psychographics, and buying behavior. By creating a brand persona, you can tailor your marketing and communication efforts to speak directly to your true followers.

To develop your brand, there are a few things you should think of, and it will require a bit of research, creativity, and knowing what makes you special. For me, it was all about hats. I’ve been wearing hats since I was a toddler. I was the kid that his mother would have a hat for every special outfit like Easter Sunday. Make sure you research your audience and find the connection between you and them. Find the common thread between you and them. Yes, you want to stand out, you want to be just different enough, but connectable. Develop a good story. Make sure you don’t just pull a persona out of the air; it must mean something to you and your followers. Create a logo that represents a visual representation of your brand persona and stay consistent. Use your new logo like McDonald's uses the golden arches, in everything.

Lastly, understand the benefits of using a brand persona. When I told the person that my hats were a part of my brand persona, and they saw that each day was a different hat that went perfectly with the rest of my outfit, they never mentioned it again. When you use your brand you will get more customer engagement, they will begin to look for it and expect it. Consistency with your brand is how you build brand loyalty. Your brand helps you stand out from your competitors and gives you a clear understanding of what your niche is. This will help you understand your target audience and help you make better marketing and business strategies.

Developing a strong brand persona is a powerful tool for businesses and artists like you looking to connect with your target audience on a deeper level. By understanding your ideal customer's demographics, psychographics, and buying behavior, you can create a brand persona that resonates with them and helps you achieve your marketing and music goals.
