Merch the Show & Independent Artist of the Week.

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's Tip Unda The Hat!

This week, Shows and Merch, Let’s go -

Ok for those new to the blog, we’ve been talking about making money and the different revenue streams. We’ve talked about downloads, streams, and physical product like CD’s and vinyl. So let’s talk about the obvious. If you are a working musician, that means the work comes in the form of gigs. Now I have met artists that found their way to record deals with demos from the studio, or with a ton of social media followers; had no band, and had never gigged. Trust me, that ain’t the norm. You’ve got to put in the work. And why wouldn’t you. Part of the beauty of being a singer, musician, poet, book writer or whatever is being in front of an audience. Any one of us will tell you there is healing power in giving back what God gave you; plus you get paid to do it, 🤯  mind blowing and cool all at the same time. Now some of you should put in the time to find a booking agent because you are gigging to the point where it’s hard to keep up with writing that new song and pounding the phones to find the next gig. Yes I know you are a DIY musician, but remember we talked about DIWO (Do It With Others) Let it go, and let someone help.

The other part of your show is what do you have to sell after? Of course you should have CD’s, Vinyl (in some cases) and downloads. The next thing though is merch. Now you could just slap the cover of your CD or single on the front of the shirt/hat and keep it moving. However, creative people have to be creative and the mindset of branding has to come into play; and to do that is expensive. Think of your brand as an artist. Do you have a logo, a funky look, a whole vibe? That might be the move. Also to extend your brand you can bundle your product for one low price i.e. a Tee shirt, CD and whatever else ties into your brand. Go beyond tee shirts too. Hats (my personal favorite), bracelets, and calendars are things that stay with people. Imagine your pretty face on a calendar touting your brand, some show dates, website, and cool motivational sayings that move people. Just know that you are unique, give people more than a memory of the gig, make a fan, make a friend. You will be better for it, trust me.
