What is a marketing funnel?? - Let’s go -

Well, I hope you had an outstanding Memorial Day Weekend. I want to shout out all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for this country and the freedoms we all enjoy today, and I hope you got some kind of barbecue too. 😉. You ever have to use a funnel? Maybe for your car or pouring something from a large bottle to a smaller one? Well, there is a thing called a marketing funnel that you need to be aware of. A funnel is the steps taken by your followers or fans that make them aware of your brand and take them to buy your music and stay with you to become not only a fan but a superfan and an advocate. I know you feel like hey, I got a hot song and when I post it on IG or TikTok, er’body is going to love it and rush to download it. Like a one-two punch. Please don’t forget, you are independent, and in the DIY world you get to do everything yourself, or you hire a team, but nonetheless, it’s the indie world you live in, and it’s a process. The marketing funnel describes your followers journey from follower to fan. From the initial stages when someone learns about your music, to buying it, to advocating for you so to show others how great you are. 

So to be transparent, if you ask 5 different marketers in different fields what the funnel looks like, you might get 5 different diagrams. However, one thing will always be the same; and that’s the top of the funnel. Awareness. We’ve talked about brand awareness for sometime now and it’s no secret that the only way for someone to know who you are is to become aware of you. What is your brand, how do you make it stand out? Posting is one thing, but then to take it a step further by boosting and buying targeted ads is another. You must make sure that you are targeting the right fans however. This is extremely important. If you are a hip hop artists. but your ads are finding their way to people who listen to pop, wellll…..you almost made it, but guess what, you just took an L.  

A great funnel for musicians is one that has the following elements. Awareness, Consideration (sometimes called Interest) Conversion (sales), loyalty and advocacy. 

Awareness (the top of the funnel) is as it sounds, a contact has  heard of you, your brand or your music. They heard about you via your gigs, website, social pages, media sites, blogs, paid traffic on social pages. But they haven’t taken any action.

Consideration or the “casual” fan. They’ve engaged with your content in some way; a like, and emoji, a comment or something. These are your email, YouTube, Spotify, Twitter, SoundCloud, or Bandcamp followers. Conversion, yeah these the cats you want, these are the folks that actually bought something. Look at them as Gold. It doesn’t matter where or how. They may have bought something at the gig, online, some of your merch, or went to a live show. Loyalty (retention, these are your Silver folks) They have become fans that keeps coming back for more. They also follow you with $$, crowdfunding, Patreon, Subscription, and even frequent purchases (like Uncle Fred who bought 5 downloads for his X box buddies). Advocacy (here are your Platinum fans) They represent every part of the funnel and they absolutely love your brand, your content and they tell others; and do so consistently. So when you are writing out your marketing strategy, think of the funnel, how to get people to it. I’ll tell you definitively how to get people to your funnel. Create some really dope music. Ain’t that crazy? Yeah you still need talent. Oh wait here’s one mo thing, the tunnel never ends. After this it’s time to retarget….. Don’t be skurd!
