What are you putting out there… - Let’s go -

So everybody says hey you need to post post post to get your followers up, get some engagements, and get your content out there….woah! What does it all mean? And creating content, and posting can be an all-day affair. What if you still have a 9 to 5 jobbie job, and writing and recording after work, then gigging on the weekends and you’re a one-man show? How you ‘spose to do all this content? Well, one thing is to look at how you think about it. Stop stressing and just keep your camera phone at the ready. Don’t be shy about it either, tell your audience hey I’m taking a selfie of me with y’all, be all up in Starbucks talking to your camera, trust me, I’ve done it, people will smile and have whatever thoughts they will, but they will think it’s cool and that you are some superstar that they just don’t know yet.

If you aren't writing, recording, gigging, or just listening to music for inspiration, (that's important too) social media and your website (old school artists you hear me?) can be your best friend and the best way to communicate with your people. This is especially true for artists who haven't gone out beyond their circle or their sphere of influence, meaning young artists just starting out or older artists who just don’t see the value in social media. Trust me - you need it.

It is important to post regularly, and if possible to do so on a schedule. This will help grow your audience strengthen your algorithms within the platforms that you post on, and ultimately help your overall career. Whatever you post, stay consistent with your brand and stay on brand message. Keep your business page all about your music, and make it fun of course, but this is not the place to share your political views or discuss the latest big gossip topic, especially if you know they are polarizing; Keep that on your personal page.

Whenever you post something online, be it a photo from your concert, announcing your upcoming events, or sharing news, you want it to have a specific positive outcome - boost your reputation, bring more people to the live performance, sell a CD etc. From a business point of view, with every published post you participate in content marketing. In other words, have a specific goal in mind. Sometimes that goal may simply be awareness, and trust me that’s fine. You will then want to up the ante by boosting the post or even buy some ads on Facebook, IG, Google, or TikTok.

So now you’re thinking, “But what do I post?” Well, it’s simple; everything, just don’t forget to be goal-oriented. And please stop saying “I forgot to take pictures in the studio, I forgot to video my gig...blah blah blah.” It’s your job, not to forget. When you are setting up for a gig or a studio session or even practice, film it. Just 10 - 15 seconds is enough. Let people know this is what the grind looks like, this is what they are paying for when they buy into you. Let them know what hard work looks like. People will swear up and down that being on stage for a talented musician is easy work. The Curtis Family C-Notes posts their practice sessions every Monday and that has grown a life of its own. They now have guests come and just hang out and play with them on Mondays, and they prove to the world that this is real work.

Here are some other content ideas that you should look into::

  • Post photos of your instruments and gear.
  • Post a video of pictures of you in your car listening to your music.

  • Write blog posts about your music, your process, and your inspirations.
  • Interview other musicians.
  • Share tips and advice for aspiring musicians.
  • Host a Q&A session with your fans.
