Analytics???- Let’s go -

Ok, I will get back to writing about real music for music’s sake but for now, I’m still on things like Analytics. One thing that every person that has ever worked in music as a performer, writer, producer, promotions person, publicist, marketer, or mailroom person can agree on is that this industry has always been super competitive. Not only is there monumental pressure to produce the next big hit but even then, you have to get it to the right audience. Let us not get it twisted, making the music is and will always be the primary focus. However, how do you make sure that your style of music is getting to the people who want to experience it? Analytics. The past few years have seen a total takeover by technology. The machines seem to be taking over, and we are becoming digitized and depending on AI, but we must admit, it is making life a little easier if it’s used right and used like a tool to understand how to get your fans, and followers what they want. Creating a professional online presence for your music is a must for every DIY musician. You can use your website to promote and sell your music and merch, list show dates, and keep in touch with followers. The reality is, fans’ taste in music is changing, and you have to change with it while understanding the craft of music and storytelling. I love what KRS-One says here in an interview about learning new and old knowledge. Click it, it will inspire you. But, I digress, data analytics or data science is a set of tools that monitor music patterns, tastes, trends, demographics, and preferences. Back in the 90s, we said how can something so cold as business understand the warmth and emotionally filled art of music. That statement still holds true to date and is where data science comes in. Now, analytical tools used by companies like Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp Artist Statistics try and predict the next big music trend for each genre. Data science and music are emerging as a combination that might baffle a lot of people.

SGA, (n.d.) asks how can music be influenced by data? This is what we all want to know. Today, independent musicians choose their own music, write their songs, and produce music videos or lyric videos based on what they deem relevant to their brand and listeners' preferences.

The music industry at large is becoming so heavily commercialized that now is a great time to be independent and get your music to your fans and followers via digital distribution and your website. You also want people to download your music, buy your tee shirts and come to your shows.

Analytics is playing an important role in transforming the future of music for independent artists and these tools are readably available to you.

Data analytics helps you know what fans and lookalike audiences (that’s an audience that has not yet interacted with you but has the same demographics as your followers) want to hear from an artist like you.

I like how (Why Music Data Analytics Tools Are an Artist’s Best Friend, 2022) puts it and talks about every artist needs to have role models, or musicians whose art and output inspire them. The same can be true from an analytical point of view. Artists can learn just as much from studying the trajectories of other artists as they can from a workshop on music marketing. With this philosophy in mind, I’m asking all of the artists, artists’ managers, and people who work with artists to find a similar artist and begin to look at their TikTok followers. Find out what is making it spike and copy that remedy.

Here are 7 Music Analytics Tools & Chart Trackers That Actually Work according to Omari. 1. Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp Artist Statistics. 2. Youtube Studio. 3. Next Big Sound. 4. Chartmetric. 5. Awario. 6. Soundcharts, and 7. Your Distributor's Dashboard.

Understanding analytics and using the right tools to access such data is extremely beneficial and quite truthfully, almost necessary for an artist to succeed in today's music industry. With these powerful insights on your music, audience, and overall engagement,  allows you to optimize your online marketing strategy and identify your strengths and weaknesses, along with what you should continue or change in the future. The bottom line, this is today’s music industry, please get in the game, and get in to win. No, you can not do all of this by yourself. Get a team, and make sure there’s a social media marketing expert on your team as well as an entertainment lawyer. If you do this, in today’s game you will have No Worryz!
