Social Media Ads verzuz Marketing, what’s the difference? - Let’s Geaux -

Well, it’s more than obvious that in today’s digital age, social media is incredibly important to get your music everywhere it needs to go. Targeting the right audience, finding your niche, and staying consistent, it’s crazy how this business has evolved. It’s no longer just good enough just to be proficient on your instrument, or be a wordsmith on the mic, or even be a great DJ. You’ve got to either master social media or get someone on your team who can, so you can just do the music.

Understanding the ins and outs of social media can be exhausting at times. I mean really, sometimes it makes no sense, especially when the platforms are constantly changing. Well, all I’m going to do is break down the difference between ads and marketing for you.

So let’s start with the free stuff, well more like free’ish. Social Media Marketing.

Social media marketing is usually the process of organically posting and sharing content on social media platforms to build relationships with fans, promote your music, and drive traffic to your website. Social media marketing is a long-term strategy that takes time and effort to build, but it can be a very effective way to connect with your fans and grow your music career. There are a few aspects of social media marketing that must happen for you to be successful at it. First, you need authenticity. This is back to finding your niche that we spoke about in a previous post. Organic reach. Now this is a tricky one. Generally, with an organic post, you get about 5% of your friend/follower base. The way to beat that % is to have your followers post to their friends and so on. The only way to do that is to be consistent, yep, it’s time-consuming, but it’s got to get done. You are in this for the long-term results. IG, Spotify, and TikTok are taking down fake followers and bots. They’ve figured out the plug, so don’t get caught slipping. The competition is tough, but if you find your niche and your audience it makes it that much easier.

As far as ads go, this is where you open the bag. Ads on social media, like radio or TV (still viable mediums btw), cost money. The game here is to target target target. Ads are all about your target audience. Know them, cater to them, and have them become advocates for you. Platforms have really good measurable result tools. Using detailed analytics allows you to see what's working and what’s not. Looking at tools like your cost per result helps you know if you are spending money in the right place, conducting the right type of ad, and furthering your reach. Now I will say, if you don’t know what you are doing, you’re going to spend a lot of unnecessary money. Take a class, hire someone or something, just don’t throw good money after bad.

So you must ask yourself, what’s good for you? Your best bet is to know what your specific goal and budget is.

If you're looking for quick results, such as lead generation or sales, social media ads may be a good option. If you're looking to build a long-term relationship with your fans, social media marketing may be a better choice. If you’re not already following me on social media, I’d be glad if you would.
