Playlist Matter & #IAOTW - ITAMIYO!

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's Tip Unda The Hat!

This week, The Playlist, Let’s go -

Well you know how it goes, you’ve finished your single, and submitted to your DSP of choice, it’s time to get on the top streaming services and that means Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, YouTube and the rest of them. In addition it means all the digital store partners like TuneCore, CDBaby, DistroKid, UnitedMasters etc., are all capable of providing their subscribers the top listened to, curated playlists of new music that gets released each week. So with that said, this is the DSPs way of doing more than just being a streaming service, they can also be touted as a marketing tool - well kindah. One of the best ways to grow your listeners and share your music or podcast is to get on playlists of which let’s face it, Spotify is the best. So from here on out, when I talk about playlists it will be the coveted Spotify playlist.

So to get on an “official” Spotify playlist your songs need to be heard by the editors also known as playlist curators. They listen to millions of songs, sort them out by genre, mood and other criteria. Users can also create and share playlists, and some actually have thousands of followers. These playlists, both by curators and users are often time how people discover new music. Let’s see how essential they can be; a playlist called Low-key Weekend has over 70,000 followers. Songs that have been added have gone from virtual obscurity, to 2 or 3 million streams. But as with everything, trying to get onto a highly sought after playlist ain’t for the weak! Can’t be procrastinating; it takes timing, patience and the right song. After your single has been delivered to Spotify (and you’ve claimed your Spotify For Artist page) the waiting game begins. After 2 or 3 days you can start checking your Spotify For Artist account to see if you’ve landed on the “unreleased” section. Now here’s the thing though, you need to submit your single at least two (2) weeks prior to your release date, because you must submit your single for playlist consideration at least seven (7) days prior to the release of your single. Alright, let’s go get on those playlists!!

This week's #IAOTW - Independent Artists Of The Week is Itamiyo, West African Rapper now living in Dallas Texas.
