This week, YouTube Money - Let’s go -

So how do you really make money from YouTube? I’m always hearing “if we put it on YouTube, we can get paid!” But you never really see those people that say that get paid. But you know out there in the universe, people are getting paid, and more than just the professional YouTubers with millions of subscribers; but how??🤷🏽‍♂️  As a DIY musician you need to find every opportunity to make money everywhere it’s available. And though it’s tougher than some people make it out to be, it is available. So first off if you are using a digital distributor like CDbaby, DistroKid, or Tunecore, you will have your music delivered to YouTube Music and of course you will get your streaming royalties just like Spotify, Apple Music etc. YouTube Music by the way is different from YouTube the platform which is for videos while searching on YouTube Music is going to be audio only. Upon release of your audio track YouTube Music will create an “Art Tracks,” or “Topic Video” that plays your song with a display of your album artwork. So two categories (in our music space) to make money are subscribers to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music. Additionally there’s money to be made from the regular YouTube channel as well. Once you opt-in for YouTube Monetization, your music will be matched with the YouTube Content ID system, YouTube will find all the videos that use your music and an ad will be placed on that video.  These are your uploads and other users that upload using your music. When you set up your digital distribution for the song you are releasing be sure to choose YouTube music as one of the stores. I would suggest that you just pick all the stores. YouTube videos do not generate a dime until an ad has been served by a copyright owner, which is why YouTube royalties are generated by ad dollars. And again, you must tell YouTube to monetize your videos or there will be no funds issued there.

Now there are rules to the game, the channel that the video is on must have at least 1,000 subscribers (that’s why everyone is so busy saying “hit that subscribe button”) and must have 4,000 hours of watch time over the past 12 months. Now of course you can make money on YouTube the old fashion way:  reach 1K subscribers and apply for the YouTube Partner Program, Become an affiliate marketer, Create sponsored content through brand deals  Create and sell your own product or merchandise Turn to crowdfunding.

This week's #IAOTW - Independent Artists Of The Week is The Curtis Family C-Notes. They hail from San Francisco and are a family of seven fresh off AGT and a huge JCPenney national commercial.
