This week, A Compilation project - Let’s go -

With so many collabs happening in music now it stands to reason that compilation albums are starting to pop back up. So let’s start here, a music collab is when two or more artists get together to produce a project. Sometimes artists just reach out on platforms like tiktok and create short versions of these called duets. It’s a great thing to do both creatively and marketing wise. Collabing helps strengthen your creative process and it introduces you to an audience that doesn’t know you, but will give you a shot because you are collabing with someone they follow.

The compilation album is a musical release made up of songs that are not usually intended to be viewed as a single work. Compilation albums are comprised of tracks by various artists. These compilation projects are usually compiled from a particular musical style or theme, such as a movie or stage play soundtrack. With that said, it’s important to note that a soundtrack is not synonymous for compilation;  there have been some really dope soundtracks that were done by one person like Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, yeah I went back with that reference. In addition, a compilation album can also be by one person such as a greatest hits or best of project. But for us DIY folks, it’s going to be a various artist joint.

Sometimes new labels will use the compilation to introduce themselves and their artists to the public by releasing one work. Other times they use what they consider to be left over tracks, or previously unreleased tracks from artists to rebrand or re-establish older artists and present them to a new audience. There are several reasons to consider making a compilation project.

Be careful when planning your Compilation project however, not  all digital distribution companies distribute them. Distrokid, for example, does not do compilations or various artist projects. For CDbaby, If your album has 4 or more performing artists listed on the tracks, then it must include "Various Artists" as the album's artist name. The artist name for the tracks should then list out every performing artist on each track. Everybody wants their credit ya know.
