Who loves Indie Artists? - Let’s go -

With all of the new hot music coming out from perennial superstars like Beyonce and nem, I’m sure you ask yourself how can an independent artist thrive in these murky waters. And on top of that beside Mama and nem who’s really supporting independent artists?🤷🏽‍♂️

Well just to let you know, according to MIDiA Research independent labels and artists out-performed the majors in 2020 growing 27%. However, Midia Research found out that  market share statistics “significantly underplay the revenue contribution of independents,” sparking a 2021 study by MIDiA that measures market shares on an ownership basis, rather than a distribution basis. Per their findings, the market share of independent acts jumps up by 9.2%, to 43.1% — in other words, an additional $2.1 Billion. So where are these actual people that are buying indie music hiding out? The B in billion let’s you know they are out there.

Most indie artist think it’s all about soundcloud and Bandcamp; well guess what? For all you Bandcampers out there, they just sold out to Epic Games. Does that mean your music will show up on Games? 🤷🏽‍♂️We’ll see.

But before I go any further, there are a few things I want to mention. You must answer this question for all of your fans/followers; WIIFM (What’s In It For Me). I would suggest, stop asking for support and start thinking what am I GIVING? What are they getting when they follow you and buy your music? There are roughly 1 Billion people on IG and 66,000 tracks go into Spotify a day - A DAY!! Being good or even great is not enough. What is your brand, what makes you click, what makes you different? Do you have the “IT FACTOR?” Nick Carr of Razmusic  shared with Hypebot that there were 4 types of indie fans. 1. People that know you - this is mama nem, school mates, etc. you know who I’m talking about. 2. Converted fans - the people that you connected with online, through your manager, etc. They would drive accross state lines to come to your gig. When you see them on any social, treat them like royalty! 3. Punters - They don't know you but love live music so they go to what ever venue they know that always has good music. 4 Er’body else - the folks that stumble upon your music while looking for something else. Maybe they were in the coffee shop to work and you were doing an acoustic set, maybe they were on a playlist and there you were, or even at an open mic. Truthfully next time you are at an open mic - work the crowd. Have your download cards with your QR codes on them, don’t get apathetic or lazy now - it’s grind time! And for those of you that are not gigging - GO GIG! Don’t have a way to gig? Become a regular at the open mic. MAKE them know you!! These are your fans to gain - or lose. It’s up to you. Go get ‘em.
