What’s Next in Music Distribution & #IAOTW - Ruby Camille

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's Tip Unda The Hat!

For some of the best independent music from artists you need to know, click, listen and follow spoti.fi/3td3Xol. This week Ruby Camille. Know any Indie artists that need to make the list? Send them to me, if we dig ‘em, they take the number one spot.

This week, so what’s up next? - Let’s go -

So I’ll date myself right quick. When I got in the business we were slinging cassette tapes and albums, remember ca’singles? 😆 yeah that was a thing. Then it moved on to CD’s and the music business was on fire! Then one day Napster snuck in through the back door and we went from downloads to streaming 🤌🏽 that quick. So what’s next? One thing about the music industry is, it’s going to change.

The things that people are talking about now of course are crypto and blockchain. Snoop Dogg is looking at turning newly acquired Death Row Records into an NFT label. Wow!🤯 I’ll tackle those next week. This week I’ll stay with my own opinion about the future.

Any Nerds or Blerds (Black Nerds) out there? There’s a thing out there called Augmented Reality (AR) and it is tech that lets you superimpose digital content (images, sounds, text) over a real-world environment, but that’s nothing new. Remember Pokemon Go? I know you nerds do. It came out in 2016 and it was huge and Nintendo stock went through the roof (naw I didn’t have any😔).

So how will this affect us Unda The Hat? AR might be the new release model of the future. According to Tamara Hrivnak, head of Music Business Partnerships at Facebook, “AR has the potential to be the next format for music…it puts fans at the heart of the experience and it’s authentic. It won’t be about pre produced content, it will be something that is happening in the moment,” and taking it back to the experience we used to get back in my day. What if I recorded a song, only released it on video, with no audio release?  And what if the video was in AR? Facebook is now testing new AR filters on its new Portal TV hardware that could potentially allow me to have a lip sync battle with you, where you look like a hip hop head and I look like some old jazz cat named Scatman? These kinds of experiences really bring something different to the market in a way that celebrates music, but that isn’t just about being top of the charts.” Good Lawd, it’s a lot to think about.

This week's #IAOTW - Independent Artists Of The Week is Ruby Camille - Nashville based singer-songwriter (my publishing folks out there, she needs a pub deal ASAP, get at me) with a hot new single coming out this Friday March 4th called Call Us Queens.
