This week, the importance of a good Press release - Let’s go -

In this current information crazed climate we live in we all can agree that content is king…🤔I mean money is really king, but that’s a different debate; anyway I digress…. When we talk about content that tells the world who you are as a musician the document you need is a press release. The press release is a common tool used to bring publicity to your doorstep. This is publicity that you control so it will be about all the good news you have; your new project, any new press, new gigs, record label signings etc.  Now, believe it or not there are some artists that believe they do not need a press release, especially now that they have social media. “If I put it on the gram, facebook and twitter, why do I need to do anything else?”🤷🏽‍♂️ Well here’s the thing, a press release not only validates online content, it serves other purposes that a quick post can’t. At one point the press release was the main tool to let the press know that an artist had something newsworthy going on. Now it has become part of your marketing mix, and gives you a reason to email certain contacts that are not reading your online posts. So don’t make the mistake of not having a good press release.

With a good press release there are a few things to keep in mind. Make it newsworthy, meaning a press release is special, treat it that way. Only send one out when you have something new going on and it needs a hook, just like a good song. Keep it short, sweet and to the point. People who read press releases read a lot of them, make yours short but interesting enough to grab their attention in the first couple of lines. This one is important, make sure to write in third person. Write about yourself as if you were interviewing another artist and writing about them. I believe you should add a current photo with your press release, if it’s for an album release I would suggest it be the album artwork. Make sure that the first line wants to make them keep reading, don’t put them in suspense as to why you are writing a press release. Give good information in the middle, use descriptive words, give a little personal history, a little about your musical journey and a good button to close it. Try not to get too long winded and remember to proofread; maybe even bounce it off a band member or that aunt that’s a third grade English teacher. There are several professional press writers, publicists and people like myself that do this, so if you have a budget, hire them, it will be worth it.
