This week, submitting to TV & Film - Let’s go -

We’ve talked about what licenses are needed if you get a song on a TV or film project. But let’s talk about how you get your music there in the first place?

Getting your music featured in movies can not only help you find new fans and followers ,but help take your career to a new level, and of course put a few dollars in your pocket. However, there are a few things to think about when dealing with TV, film, ad agencies and the like. It bears repeating that you’ve got to take care of the licensing, otherwise this is all for nothing. 🤷🏽‍♂️ This idiom is where you will need to do some research and talk with “Uncle Google.” Film music first and foremost does not look for hits, they look for music that fits. TV shows and movies use different styles depending on the vibe, setting or mood of the production. This means you need to know what style the show is looking for and this will let you know what opportunity is available.

Do your research! Places like Google, SongwriterUniverse.com, Tunefind, IMDB and Linkedin are good places to find out who is working on what show, what companies are out there that place music and who the music supervisor is. When submitting to Music Supervisors, they want to know that you “get it.” They don’t have time to coach you through the process. They won’t look at emails that say “hot music” or “please listen.” Know what show this person is working on, put that in the subject line. Songs should be totally finished, mixed and mastered. They don’t want unfinished songs with your explanation of “I can get it like you want it…” If they asked for it today, they needed it yesterday. And by all means make sure it is sample free, with all the paperwork, splits and publishing taken care of. No leased beats! This is the big leagues, they are not going to walk you through any of this.

Tunefind is great to let you know what songs have been placed on shows. Look before you leap. If the show is using nothing but big hit A-list artists, chances are that is only what they are looking for. Look for the shows that have indie artists that have a vibe similar to yours. Chances are the music supervisor will give you a listen.

This week's #IAOTW - Independent Artists Of The Week is Naimah, a native of Washington DC is unbound by genres, as her music transcends all that you’ve heard. Click on her name, scroll down, click the picture and the button.
