This week, the difference between a soundtrack and a score - Let’s go -

Film music plays a crucial role in cinema. Back in the day of silent films, there was either a pianist or live orchestras that played while the movies played in theaters. Then the audio tracks came along and  musical scores became a part of the mix and it’s been a marriage ever since. So to define; a film soundtrack is recorded songs that go along with a film project. Sometimes called an OST or Original Soundtrack, these songs can be original or pre-existing songs that are played during the film or songs that were “inspired” by the film. Soundtracks can also have vocal snippets of dialogue from the film like The Harder They Fall soundtrack that features Regina King’s famous “We ain’t No Nincompoop” line. https://sptfy.com/86vk. Some of the more popular soundtrack recordings include Godfather, Black Panther, 8 Mile, Summer of Soul and Encanto.

A score on the other hand refers to the original music that accompanies the film (usually instrumental). In most cases, movie music is written by a film composer hired for the production. The movie score heightens and highlights the film’s emotion, creating a mood and a vibe for each scene, and sometimes per character, along with sound effects and dialogue. The film's composer writes the original score, often with the help of an orchestrator. Some popular scores include Black Panther, Lord of the Rings, Soul, Up, and Requiem of a Dream. Both the Score and the Soundtrack can be purchased however, because the score is usually classical music it is more popular with that audience. For most of the general population however, it’s the songs that stand out to them. Unless they’re watching Star Wars or something. Even the term soundtrack is the most googled item of the two, unless you are a composer yourself looking to get into the field of scoring. There are actually lots of opportunities in that area because of independent films. So for you young musicians out there, don’t get dismayed playing in the symphonic band or the orchestra. You may be the next Terrence Blanchard, Kurt Farquhar, or Danny Elfman; so keep playing, keep learning, and keep growing in your musical dexterity.
