This week, Public Relations - Let’s go -  

Public relations is the act of getting media coverage - generally to promote new music, a tour announcement or other newsworthy event. The goal of a PR campaign is to spread awareness of the news by informing the media. A couple of weeks ago I talked about the Press Release, which is indeed under the umbrella of public relations, and they do generate publicity but they are not the totality of  Public Relations even though press releases may generate good public relations. Confused? 🤔Publicity is what is generated by public relations. By definition, Publicity is an act or device designed to attract public interest, specifically information with news value issued as a means of gaining public attention or support. 

Well, in essence, Public Relations are really about the strategies that you use to increase your overall business presence, brand and message. PR is the foundation that allows you to be prepared, and if you stay ready you don’t have to get ready, for publicity when it comes your way, and someone sticks a mic in your face and asks, just who are you. PR helps to confirm your core message, business values, brand and image. While any form of communication can be considered public relations including newsletters, ezines, letters, blog posts and you guessed it, press releases; they must all be a part of a much bigger PR strategy.  

When you are putting your PR strategy together you have to think about Awareness - let people know you have a new release, gigging, or just your brand. Exposure - find creative ways to expose your persona to a wider audience, like tiktok duets, reel remixes etc. Credibility - being published in the media gives your site and your social pages trust and accountability to help generate a buzz,  and Social media content - can’t say it enough, content is king, PR helps you grow your social pages and don’t be afraid to tackle Linkedin.  

So just remember the three P’s and you will be fine; public relations, publicity and press releases. And don’t fall for the old mantra all press is good press - one wrong tweet and you will find yourself fighting battles that have nothing to do with your music.
