This week, is Education needed in music? - Let’s go -

After the airing of the Grammys and BET Awards, the questions and conversation that always pops up in certain circles is the importance of music in schools. Is music really being phased out in the school systems? Do you need it to be successful in the industry? I would think it would be determined by what you call success. In popular music several artists speak of their days in school. And some even went on to college, but the reality is music and art is being cut from a lot of schools. Popular music artists are left to their own devices to find a way to make a living with their gift. Back in 2015 it was reported that pop music lyrics average a third grade reading level. Who knows what it is now? Now since  music education improves and develops language skills in children, you would think music would be the last thing cut from a program. Music is a vehicle for excellent memory skills. Again a great reason to keep music in schools. According to a report from Save The Music, Music education funding cuts continue to be the go to option which leads to chronic underfunding. Public school per-pupil spending decreased by approximately seven percent across the country. Because of this, districts all over the nation saw severe declines in their art and music programs. So the question is does this affect the quality of the music that is recorded and awarded on these award shows? Now obviously musicians in concentrations like orchestra, or Opera usually gain extensive amounts of music education; and find opportunities in ensembles, Opera companies, theater, music teachers and the like.

Additionally in other areas like music production, technology, and the business side of the industry, an education in that field is not necessary and the more famous individuals didn't study music or production. The exception would probably be schools like Full Sail University that boast about several producers and music executives who have been a part of Grammy, BET and other award show winning projects, and of course Berklee College of Music has a host of legendary musicians. Additionally, several famous artists attended their cities performing arts high school, like Boyz II Men, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Tupac, Lady GaGa and a lot more. Still you have to wonder would the industry at large be better if music wasn’t being cut from schools. 🤔
