Is that pound sign necessary & #IAOTW - Ruby Camille

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's Tip Unda The Hat!

This week, #Hashtags, Let’s go -

So where did this hashtag thing come from anyway? By definition a hashtag is a metadata tag that is prefaced by the hash symbol, #. Hashtags are widely used on microblogging and photo-sharing services such as Twitter and Instagram as a form of user-generated tagging that enables cross-referencing of content sharing a subject or theme

The first one came from a google developer named Chris Messina in August of ‘07. He thought it would be cool to use for groups. He was right - even though Twitter labeled him a nerd. It’s so people can find certain topics or events or things that are popular or of specific note. Obviously the hashtag is for any and everybody, any business or topic. However since we focus on the DIY music and creative communities, we’ll keep it there.

It is quite apparent that Instagram, Facebook and other social platforms are more than important in the life of a musician trying to gain attention from fans. One of the best ways online to do that is by using the hashtag. Hashtags create a virtual page online for anyone who uses that specific hashtag. Grouping topics, events, new content and whatever else makes it easier for users to find similar posts. For musicians, hashtags can help reach other musicians as well as listeners.

Now for Instagram you are allowed up to 30 hashtags but please don’t use that many. A good number is somewhere between 8 - 11. Trust me I know from experience, use too many hashtags or certain hot topic ones like #rapper #f4f (follow for follow) or l4l (like for like) etc., you invite the bots; then your page looks spammy.

Hashtags are more important than just putting the pound sign in front of a word. After you’ve created your hashtags you can then analyze them and monitor their effectiveness. Instagram even has an explore page that allows you to tell how popular certain hashtags are. The reality is you won’t happen on the perfect set of hashtags the first time around. Don’t be afraid to experiment, analyse them, and if you are on a consistent plan - change them. #TestYourHashtags.
