IG Marketing & #IAOTW - Jazz Jam at Jazz Becuzz

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's #TipUndaTheHat!

This week, IG Marketing- Let’s go -

So of all the social media platforms the one that has the attention of all the music world is Instagram. 🤔  I wonder why? Well, for starters, Instagram has the highest engagement rate across all social media platforms. There are over a billion (with a B) monthly users, and 500 million of them use the app several times a day. Yes it is true that younger subscribers are on IG (short for Instagram if you didn’t get that already) than older, it is still the quintessential place to promote your music be it jazz, gospel, country, hip hop or even classical.

Now when setting up your IG account, to effectively promote your music you should get a business account. It works the same as a personal account but it has more features like analytics. One thing it does not offer like its parent company Facebook, is the opportunity to place links in your posts. Not to worry though, you are able to place a link in your bio. What that does is allows you to send your viewers to a place to buy like your website, a landing page, spotify Tidal or other selling platforms.

Let’s be clear, the most important thing is the content. It should be vivid, bold, interesting and good. It should speak to your brand and let followers know who you are and what you are about. It could be a pic of your current project, something interesting from backstage, or a video of the gig. What is important is you post something that your followers will respond to, and once they do, be sure to respond back. Don’t be afraid to share content from platforms like tiktok. But whatever you do, keep the pictures current, unless you are doing a throwback. Now the younger readers will get this, some of my older jazz and gospel artists will look at this and think oh well, it doesn’t matter I’ll use a pic from 1997. Problem is you don’t look like that anymore. Keep it updated, fresh and oh so clean or just use your logo. The idea here is to brand you, remember that, it all matters.

With so many daily users, you want to diversify your posts. Here is where IG gets fun. You have the ability to add posts, stories or reels; and they all have their own identity. One way your content can be found is the use of hashtags. They make it easier for your post to be found, but only use hashtags that are relevant to your post or reel. Stories can’t be found so easily with hashtags so just know that when you are hashtagging away. Hashtags have followers, some have more than a million followers, make sure to use good hashtags that have followers, just putting a hashtag in front of your name or something that has 0 followers will get you nothing; hashtags have a purpose, use them wisely. Here’s what we will end with, you need to know that all of the platforms want people to stay as long as possible. So if you are bringing people to IG, and your content, comments and hashtags keep them there, the further Instagram will push your posts out. The more people see your posts the more engagements you get and people downloading your music.
