Licenses for church Music - Let’s go -

Churches don't pay taxes, but do they pay publishing fees? 🤔 Well I’m sure good church folks want to make sure they are doing things the “right” way and making sure the songwriter and publisher are getting their just dues…right? Of course. And let’s get this straight upfront, outside of a church context bands that perform music written by others must have a license or they are violating copyright laws. However copyright law has an exemption from licensing in connection with religious services. But here is where it gets tricky, churches cannot broadcast the music components of their services, on TV, radio, YouTube or stream without paying for a license.

Now in the church music license game, outside of the PROs BMIASCAP and SESAC, there are three main characters. CCLI, OneLicense, and CCS. Now a lot of what they do is similar, for example both CCLI and Onelicense both provide licenses to churches to reproduce copyrighted songs in service and activities. However, OneLicense represents the catalogs of sacred music publishers, and has access to thousands of congregational hymns, songs, and service music from today's top Christian music publishers to use in worship aids, service bulletins, and projections to inspire congregational singing. CCLI on the other hand grants churches a limited set of rights for over 300,000 worship songs in their program for the following uses: • To print songs in bulletins, liturgies, programs, and song sheets • To print songs in bound or unbound songbooks compiled by the Church • To make overhead transparencies, slides, or to utilize electronic storage and retrieval methods for the visual projection of songs. CCS who ASCAP partners with, is all about Performance with their PERFORMmusic License. This license  grants churches and non-profit ministries the right to legally perform live or play pre-recorded versions of more than 17 million songs on their campus or during events. This includes music played at: • Coffee shops • Conferences & seminars • Bookstores • etc.

So which one do you need? If you are performing - CCS, reproduction CCLI and/or OneLicense. Amen? Aaaamen. The doors of the church are now open. ⛪️
