What is your Brand Voice saying? - Let’s go -

So you heard that there would be some A&R cats at the talent show (or the showcase or at church) and you are ready to give it all you got. You even have your demo with you to give to this mystical mythical A&R person. All you know is you can saang!!! Everybody says it and you know it! You even have your picture, the nice one when you went to the club with your girls holding up the peace sign. Now you don’t have a “look” yet, got a social media page that your brother set up, and even got one YouTube performance when you sang at church and turned it out. But that’s all good, ‘cause if this A&R guy hears you, you KNOW you will get signed. And then…..you woke up from 1989. If you haven’t noticed, the game has changed and it’s now all about your brand and your brand voice. Brand voice is your brand’s personality and the unique way you present yourself to the world, your look, your vibe your essence. Your brand voice must be consistent through all of your communications, that means your social media, website, blog posts, email ads, at the gig, and every time you “turn on,” it can’t change. Here’s the reality, you almost have to be a star already before you are even noticed by a label. And if you listen to Chance The Rapper, you don’t need a label at that point. You’ve done all the work, reap your own rewards. Take our artist of the week Watson's Head, for example, his tagline is “Psychadelic funk rock with a hit of reggae.” Once you see his website, IG page, or listen to his music you will see and hear the brand consistency and hear all of his tagline. Brands go to great extents to create and maintain their brand. As much as social media has changed the world, it has also changed how artists are discovered.

Now you might ask why is this important, if I can sing, rap, and move a crowd why is any of this necessary? Well, imagine going to buy a pair of jeans cause that’s who you are a jeans and chucks kinda person. They keep trying to sell you a hat. It’s not what you are looking for. Guess what, labels and music fans now are looking for someone with a brand, someone they feel will deliver and satisfy their musical taste. Your brand needs to have a distinct sense of purpose and a heightened sense of personality. You want fans, followers, and potential label suitors to get to know love and gain a sense of loyalty to your consistent brand just like they do the golden arches of McDonald's. Your brand is more than your look or your logo. It’s your message, and it can’t be one thing on TikTok, something else on IG, and something else on Facebook; albeit, those sites do have different types of audiences. If you see a Mcdonald's ad on any of them, it will be the same message filtered for that audience but the same message nonetheless; two all beef patties special sauce….etc etc.  So you need to make your brand messaging consistent and repeatable so your fans and followers continue to know and like what you’re about – this is what brand voice does. And by all means, don’t be skurd to give your brand voice a big personality with something to say, this is the new music business, right?  Just make sure your brand voice is unique, yours, and says the same thing your look and your music are saying.
