What’s the best merch for musicians?  Let’s go -

Ok, it’s Christmas time and you need to make some extra money…(wait is there such a thing as EXTRA money?) Anyway, now is the time to make and sell your merch. So the question is, why should I sell merch? Well if you don’t you are leaving money on the table. And another way to bring attention to your merch is to theme it around holidays and events. Doing a festival? Put the festival name and your band on it; now you can sell it at a premium. If you’re touring, gigging, or just have a high presence on social media you need merch. Actually even if you don’t have a high presence, merch could help you build your audience and your profile, especially if it’s good stuff. Now we know that streaming has taken away the amount of CD’s that bands can sell at their shows, but you can still sell t-shirts and even sign download cards. I heard an older blues artist say that he misses the old days of CDs because at his shows now he can’t sign a CD. I would say but you can sign a download card, a cap, or a tee shirt. In other words don’t get stuck in 1999. If you are living in today, live in today, make your merch and make it appropriate to your vibe and your persona.

A few merch tips along the way. Start small, start with something like rubber-band bracelets, stickers, and buttons. Don’t overprice, and have something unique. Make sure your logo is well represented on your merch with nice bright colors, unless  you are a goth band. The merch should also speak to your audience. The obvious number one merch item is a tee shirt. Then there are always hats (you know I’m partial to hats) vinyl, CD’s, posters, patches, guitar pics, posters, postcards, and you can go next level and make bobble head dolls of yourself and the band. But whatever you do, don’t leave any money sitting on the table.

Johnnie Walker, Robert N. Johnson, and I are back tomorrow live on Clubhouse tomorrow. Let’s have some laughs and talk about dumb criminals. “Untold Tales of the music industry.”  Click and save the link, and come join the conversation.
