I was speaking to an artist and I asked them to make sure to claim their artist page on all the DSPs. First of, DSP’s are all the digital stores that music is streamed on like iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal etc, and they wondered why.🤷🏽♂️ Well the easiest answer is, after you’ve gone through the process of selecting a digital distributor like a DistroKid, CDbaby, Tunecore etc, who places the music in the DSP’s; you want to take control of your image. Here is where you can customize your profile, keep up to date with features that change constantly, and get in depth and real time statistics from your providers. As they say knowledge is power. Knowing your statistics allows you to see how much you should spend on ads and which DSP you should spend that money with. Normally, artists and businesses tend to spend the bulk of their DSP marketing dollar with Spotify; and as well they should. Spotify still has the largest market share of all the DSPs, though they are down from 33% to 31%. After that, it’s Apple, Amazon, Tencent (who develops music streaming services for the Chinese market) and YouTube.
Another reason why you claim all of your artist pages is for credibility on digital platforms. Verification opens doors to additional features and again profile control. You can actually work these like your work your social media pages. For all of your pages you want to keep your image and bio updated, and utilize all of the features they offer.
Now I’ll admit, verification is a small but important part of branding you as an artist, it can be tedious being that there are different requirements by each DSP, (I've listed them all here), but it is easy, worth it, and it provides you with more features to add to your marketing mix and promotion strategies to keep your engagements high.
