You and Social Media & Independent Artist of the Week.

Hey, it’s TJ Miller, you want some game? Let's Tip Unda The Hat!

This week, Social Media,  Let’s go -

First I would be remiss not to mention the celebration of life of Dr. Martin Luther King. We will indeed march on until victory is won! Thank you sir!

Now at this point, everyone has some form of social media they engage with.  By far it is the most important communication tool created, and any form of business needs to be on social media. The following few weeks, I’ll spend some time talking about the different social media platforms where your brand needs to be. The science is in the strategy. Social media is how to communicate with your customers and fan base; we just have to make sure we are where they are. People hang out on different sites, at different times for different reasons.

Social media is basically short attention span media, feeding people with a twitter attention span. While they are scrolling dozens of posts by the second, you have to stand out and grab their attention, and when you get it you have to keep it. And that in itself is time consuming. You have art to create, a business to run, you don’t have time to stay glued to YouTube all day, or tweet out every cool thing that just happened to you. But it’s got to be done, it is how you market to your fans and customers. Aside from the usual platforms of fb twitter etc, artists need to be on soundcloud bandcamp, writers on goodreads, and so on. One of the biggest mistakes artists and business owners make is opening up accounts on all the relevant social media platforms, then leave them alone with no activity. In fact, social media users may be turned off by the open accounts and no engagement. There goes that issue with time again…

You want to make a clear connection to and with your fans and customers. You want them to know (to an extent of course) what you are doing, what you are working on, and what inspired you to write that song, that book or that ad. You do have to be engaging enough without going overboard. There must be an end game as well. You want to make sure there is a Call To Action to actually listen to your music, make an appointment, and support.

Next week, we’ll talk about specific platforms like Facebook, and talk a little strategy and best practices.
